Perry 200 Grand Patriotic Parade

Our library staff are very excited to be participating in the Perry 200 Grand Patriotic Parade on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Our float is almost ready and several of our staff will be accompanying it along the parade route. We hope to see many of our library patrons along the way.

If you need to brush up on your Battle of Lake Erie knowledge, the library is a great place to find books and movies on the subject. Here is just a sampling of what is available:

Summer vacation time is almost here. We have scheduled a few of our most popular classes for the month of June and then will be taking a break until September. Classes offered in June are:

June 4th 9am-12pm Microsoft Excel
June 11th 9am 11am Windows 7 Files and Folders
June 17th 5pm- 8pm Introduction to Computers
June 18th 9am-12pm Laptops
June 19th 5pm- 8pm Introduction to the Internet
June 21st 9am-12pm Introduction to Computers

A $5.00 fee per class is required to reserve a seat. Come to the Information Hub at the Blasco Library to reserve your seat.

May Cookbook Special – Throughout the month of May, The Bayfront Bookshelf gift shop, located in the Blasco Library, will feature a variety of cookbooks. Shoppers will be able to browse through a revolving selection of cookbooks for the whole month. Because the shop is staffed by volunteers, it is closed when volunteers are not available. Call 814-451-6942 to confirm that the store is open.

Annual Book Sale –

The Great American Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will be held at the Villa Maria Campus gymnasium located at 2551 W. 8th St., Erie, Pa. The sale dates are:

Sunday, June 9th through Friday, June 14th.

Sale hours are:

Sunday, 12:00pm – 8:00pm

Monday through Thursday, 10:00am – 8:00pm

Friday, 10:00am – 6:00pm

Fishing Pole and Tackle Loan Program

Did you know you can borrow a fishing pole and tackle box from the Blasco Library? All you need is a library card (adults are responsible for obtaining a fishing license).

Pennsylvania Fish for Free Days are May 27th and July 4th.

Debut of new library catalog and parent/child Internet area

Thanks to a generous grant from Dr. John M. Ferretti and Dr. Silvia M. Ferretti, we have updated the library catalog and established a Parent with Child Internet area.

The Parent/Child Internet area is made of 3 parent computers with 3 matching child computers so that both parent and child can work on a computer at the same time. The child computer contains a variety of educational games for learning levels of Pre-K to 4th grade. The parent computers have access to the Internet as well as typing and resume software.

The new Enterprise catalog includes easy to use search expanding or limiting features. Patrons can keep their own list of materials as a wish list or maintain a list of items they have already borrowed. There is even a Facebook “Like” feature so you can let all of your Facebook friends see your favorite reads.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Learn the art of pirate parley from a true gentleman o’ fortune: the Mango Languages Pirate Language course has risen from the depths o’ Davy Jones’s Locker ter make a reappearance just in time fer International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th) . Ye’ll be learnin’ the proper way to hail yer cap’n and get the landlubbin’ scallywags on board a-sailin’ smartly, among other phrases ye’ll be needin’ on the high seas.

Rachel Sumner Show Highlights Summer Reading

Award winning performer, Rachel Sumner will visit the Blasco Memorial Library on Wednesday, August 1st for two performances at 11:00am and 1:00pm in the H. O. Hirt Auditorium.

Rachel Sumner lives in Nashville, Tennessee and has music on CD’s that can be checked out from the library.

Reading stories by the campfire

A Stuffed Animal Sleepover was held in the Children’s Library on Monday, June 18th. Children brought their favorite stuffed animals to the Blasco Library on Monday night for stories and lullabies. The children went home to sleep and the stuffed pets had all sorts of fun during the night. The “stuffies” toasted marshmallows at a campfire, road the conveyor belt in the book return, did crafts, climbed the lighthouse, and so much more! Owners picked up their pets on Tuesday afternoon. Our Children’s Department has lots of fun activities planned for the summer. Take a look at the Children’s Program web page for an activity your child might like to attend!

Playaway View

It’s new! Several Playaway Views have been added to the Children’s library at the Blasco Memorial Library.

A View is a self-playing, hand-held, all-in-one media player. Each View is preloaded with multiple videos.

The Playaways check out for one week. Limit: one View per person at a time.
