Theatre On The Move Presents : An O. Henry Chocolate Box

Theatre on the Move presents an assortment of tales adapted from the stories of O. Henry. Three tales from the master of the surprise ending will be performed: Henry’s classic, “Gift of the Magi”, the sidesplitting Wild West romp “Ransom of Red Chief” and a mystery offering we know you’ll love!

There will be performances at the Millcreek Branch Library and the Lincoln Community Center on the following dates:

May 14, 2012 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.- Millcreek Branch Library, 2088 Interchange Road, Erie. Phone: 451-7084 for information.

Genealogy Help – Wednesdays In May At The Blasco Library

Each Wednesday in May, Blasco Library staff will be available in the second floor Heritage Room from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to answer your questions on genealogy research. You can learn about the databases and materials that the library has available for your family research project. Find out about the 1940 census, FamilySearch, Ancestry.com and more. The specific dates when staff will be available are: May 2, May 9, May 16, May 23 and May 30th.

Playaway View

It’s new! Several Playaway Views have been added to the Children’s library at the Blasco Memorial Library.

A View is a self-playing, hand-held, all-in-one media player. Each View is preloaded with multiple videos.

The Playaways check out for one week. Limit: one View per person at a time.

Playaway Views are durable as they are designed with kids in mind. They are portable, with a built-in speaker. Charger included in the box. No rental fees. No DVDs to put into a player. No downloading. Just press play and view!

Want to see some big ships? When visiting the Blasco Library take a look around the Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair facility where a number of ships are currently docked.

The Lakes Contender is 740 feet long and capable of carrying 38,000 tons of cargo.

Hot Wheels Display at Iroquois Avenue Branch

This Hot Wheels display comes courtesy of a long time Iroquois Branch Library user who has been collecting (and playing with) Hot Wheels toys and accessories since he was a child. He remembers especially having fun with the loop the loop track as a kid.

It will be on display at Iroquois until January 31st.

Anyone who is interested in sharing and displaying small collections in the Iroquois window is invited to contact the branch at 451-7082.

Get REAL Magnification Equipment Available At Blasco

The Blasco Library was the recipient of a “Get REAL-Regional Education Assisting Life Long Learning” grant. A collaborative effort supported by the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS), the Pennsylvania Department of Education Office of Commonwealth Libraries, and Pennsylvania’s Initiative on Assistive Technology (PIAT), a program of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, the “Get REAL” grant project provided a magnification units and a computer to make reading easier. This exciting program for individuals with disabilities is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The library received a video magnifier (also known as closed circuit TVs) . When you use this CCTV “Topaz” device you can magnify documents, books, magazines, newspapers,
letters and more so that you can read them more easily. This vision aid lets you adjust the brightness and select different colors.

Blasco and the bookmobile also received portable hand-held magnification devices called Rubies that perform many of the same functions as the larger “Topaz” unit. The portal units will be available for use in the Blasco Library Reference and the Heritage rooms as well as on the Bookmobile.

Learn the art of pirate parley from a true gentleman o’ fortune: the Mango Languages Pirate Language course has risen from the depths o’ Davy Jones’s Locker ter make a reappearance just in time fer International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th) . Ye’ll be learnin’ the proper way to hail yer cap’n and get the landlubbin’ scallywags on board a-sailin’ smartly, among other phrases ye’ll be needin’ on the high seas.
