Awesome Dinosaur Summer Program 2017

What is Awesome Dinosaur?  

Awesome Dinosaur currently consists of co-founders Annie Schmitt and Jude Shingle, who develop and promote Science, Art and Technology classes for kids in Erie, PA. Class topics include Minecraft, LEGO, Animation, Coding, Video Production and Robotics. The Friends of the Erie County Public Library have generously funded a series of classes for library patrons this summer!


5-Day Classes at Blasco

These sessions will be offered over the course of 5 consecutive days.  All events will require registration. To register, call the library at (814) 451-6936 or visit http://www.erielibrary.org/events/

There will be an initial $25 deposit required for registration in the week-long programs at Blasco, due to class space and commitment requirements. The deposit  will be prorated and given back to the patron according to the number of classes attended ($5 per class).

Minecraft Modding —June 19-22 from 6-7:30 and June 23 from 3-4:30PM

Ages 10-16 (14 kids)

Students learn Java, a computer programming language, by learning to mod Minecraft code. Create new items such as armor, swords, blocks and materials then play and share your mod.

Claymation—July 31-August 3 from 6-7:30 and August 4 from 3-4:30 PM

Ages 7-14 (12 kids)

Students create stop-motion animation movies using clay, complete with sound effects and titles. Enjoy a student film festival at the end.

Video Game Hacks — August 7-10 from 6-7:30 PM and August 11 from 3-4:30PM

Ages 8-12 (14 kids)

Using Scratch, an introductory programming language, students take classic computer videogames and modify their code to do new things and change the rules. Create unique controllers using a Makey Makey and have family video game arcade night at the end.

 

Deposits are cash-only and must be brought to the Blasco Children’s Reference Desk at least one week prior to start of the class. When bringing in your child’s deposit, please remember to tell the librarian the class title, student’s name, and contact phone number.


One-Day Workshops

One Day Workshops are designed for children ages 7-12 and are free. Find a program at your favorite ECPL branch.

3D Printing w/ Minecraft—June 14, 12-3PM  at Blasco/the Admiral Room

3D Printing w/ Minecraft —July 5,  4-7PM  at Blasco/Storytime Room

3D Printing w/ Minecraft —August 2, 1-4PM at Blasco/Storytime Room

3 hrs | Ages 7-12 (14 kids)

Learn to use a 3D printer by designing and printing your creations in Minecraft.

Epic Movie Trailers —July 7, 10-12PM at the Iroquois Branch.

Epic Movie Trailers —August 14, 2-4PM at the Edinboro Branch.

2 hrs | Ages 7-9 and 10-12 (14 kids)

Join the fastest, most epic film crew of all time as we create a movie trailer for a film that will never make it to a theater near you! Students write a script, use face-makeup, and film a movie trailer faster than you can say, “Action!”

Ozobot Challenges August 3, 1-3PM at the Lincoln Branch.

Ozobot Challenges August 7, 1-3PM at the Edinboro Branch.

Ozobot Challenges August 8,  1-3 PM at the Iroquois Branch.

Ozobot Challenges August 9, 1-3 PM at the Millcreek Branch.

2 hrs | Ages 7-10 (14 kids)

Students work in teams to program and control ozobots (robots) to complete a series of challenges. A wonderful introduction to code and logic-based problem solving.


Family Activities

Family Classes – fun for the whole family! These free sessions are meant for the whole family to engage.

Cel Painting—June 15, 1-4 PM at the Lincoln Branch.

Ages 7-16 / Parents and children together,  30 attendees for 3 hrs

Ever wonder how the original beautiful, hand-drawn Disney animations were created? Learn how in this workshop and paint your own animation cel. A mix of drawing, watercolor painting, and acrylic painting make for an elegant take-home cel, framed and suitable for hanging.

Circuit Art Greeting Cards— June 26,  2-3:30 PM at the Edinboro Branch.

 Ages 7-16 / Parents and children together, 30 attendees for 90 min

Light up someone’s heart with a handmade greeting card! Learn to use LED lights, batteries and conductive tape to integrate a light-up circuit into your paper art. Utilize a variety of papers and art materials to finish off your masterpiece.

Lego Build/FilmJuly 31, 1-4PM at the Millcreek Branch.

Ages 7-16 / Parents and children together,  30 attendees for 3 hrs

Build with LEGO then make your very own LEGO movie using stop-motion animation. Add sound effects and titles, then join us for a showing of our films at the end.

Duct Tape—August 1,  1-2:30 PM at the Iroquois Branch.

Ages 7-16 / Parents and children together, 30 attendees for 90 min

The durability (and incredible variety of colors and patterns!) make Duct tape a perfect material for making fun & usable pouches, pencil cases, or wallets. Get tips on designing and creating your own accessory to take home.

Blasco Film Series

Join us in the H.O. Hirt Auditorium on the last Sunday of every month for a featured film. All shows are free and open to the public.
