In Erie’s Vital Signs for 2014, the Times News identified early learning as the “linchpin” for Erie’s long term success. The analysis is right on the mark, but I would even take that one step further.
What is the one characteristic shared by cities all over the world that have been identified as “the best places to live?” Hands-down, it’s that they collectively embrace education and learning—not just for the very young, but for everyone. People who live in the “best places” embrace ideas. Innovation, imagination, curiosity and creativity figure importantly into their lives.
The best places to live in the world—also hands down—have the best libraries. This is not surprising, as the vitality of the public library has always been one of more reliable measures of any region’s quality of life.

Learning Express Library has practice tests for the new GED test in both English and Spanish. The practice tests simulate the content, timing, and format of the new 2014 GED test.
The Erie County Public Library, with generous support from the Friends of the Erie County Library, welcomes Fine Artist, Videographer and Director of Box of Light Studios, Jude Shingle as its very first Artist in Residence. January marks the beginning of a new Art Display Space at the Blasco Library.
Our first exhibit comes to us from McDowell High School’s Digital Arts Classes taught by Bethany Krowsoski and Mike Prather. The students’ art is illustrative of digital techniques learned in class to manipulate drawings and photos.
If you or your school would be interested in displaying artistic work on this wall in the future, please contact Marcy Hall at firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
Funding for the hanging system for the Art Display Space was given generously by the Friends of the Erie County Library.
